Born in Burlington, Kara-Lis Coverdale is an internationally decorated, pioneering composer and performer whose works transcend the boundaries of acoustic and electronic music. With a deep commitment to exploring sonic afterlife, memory, and material curiosity, Coverdale’s music blends diverse musical systems and languages into immersive experiences that captivate listeners across the globe. Her highly acclaimed body of work spans several solo albums, including Grafts (2017), Aftertouches (2015), and A 480 (2014), showcasing her innovative approach to microtonality, overtone systems, and the emotional dimensions of sound.
A versatile artist, Coverdale has toured worldwide, performing at prestigious concert halls, festivals, and clubs throughout Europe, North America, Asia, and Australia. She has headlined and collaborated with renowned acts such as Big Thief, Caribou, Floating Points, and was part of the Konoyo Gagaku Ensemble in 2019. Her solo performances have been praised by major publications like The New York Times and The Guardian for their groundbreaking vision, emotional depth, and otherworldly soundscapes.
In addition to her solo work, Coverdale has composed for a wide range of mediums, from film and theatre to symphonic ensembles and installations. Her notable commissions include works for Cello Octet Amsterdam, Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Vanemuine Theatre, where she integrates ratio-based tunings inspired by Kepler’s planetary harmonics. Her exploration of pipe organ music also plays a central role in her practice, with recent premieres in Grace Cathedral, Basilica dos Congregrados in Portugal, and as a part of The Jazz Festival in Berlin, Mutek Festival in Montreal, and Big Ears Festival in Tennessee.
Coverdale has collaborated with notable artists such as Actress, Yasuaki Shimizu, and Caterina Barbieri, and her work spans multimedia collaborations with light artists and digital creators. A passionate advocate for the restorative potential of sound, she has written works for immersive environments, including saunas and psychedelic therapy, further demonstrating her commitment to music as a transformative force.
